💫If you've submitted over 100 applications and you haven't been called back, there is a strong chance your resume needs to be revamped.

Personally, I feel like this question is irrelevant to the hiring process, and as a hiring manager, I never ask this to candidates.

But during an interview, you always want to respond to every question the hiring manager poses.

👉🏾The most common response is, " I am looking for a new challenge."
To be completely honest, the real answer is usually a mix of:

✅This job pays more, so hire me

✅My current working environment is unhealthy, so hire me

✅This job aligns with my career goals, so hire me

👉🏾In your answer, you want to show that you have researched the company and prove how you can align them to your career goals.

👉🏾At the end of your interview, be sure to ask the hiring manager(s), "Why is this position open?"

👉🏾As much as they are interviewing you, you are also interviewing them to see if you want to work for their company.

It's Negotiation time! Ok, so you submitted a polished resume (with my help, of course), you nailed the interview, and now it's negotiation time!

👉🏾When the hiring manager calls to offer you the position, never accept over the phone. You can say something like, " I had a lovely time meeting with you, and I am excited to join the team. Would you be able to send over the offer letter in the email along with the benefits booklet, please?"

👉🏾One of the pros of negotiating over email is that it gives you some time to think about what you want to ask for and gives the HR to consider what they can offer you.

👉🏾If you are bold like I am, hold off on responding to the offer on the same day. Even if you are 100% sure you want the role. Type up your email response with a counteroffer, ask all the questions you can think and then schedule the email to go out the following day between 8 am-9 am

💰Prompt 1/ Beginner: This might be your first time negotiating a salary. That's ok! Feel free to ask for a bit more than they offered. Company X might meet you in the middle or give you exactly what you asked for.

💰Prompt 2/ Bring the Sauce: You have a bit more skin in the game, and you are comfortable with earning more and more responsibility. At this point in your career, you have a designation that has an annual fee. Because you work for this Company X, they will likely cover the cost of your designation, but you should always ask and confirm in your offer letter or have an email thread confirming such offer.
Side note: This usually only works if the designation is relevant to your field. Ex. You are being hired for a Project Manager role, and you hold a Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.

💰Prompt 3/ Full Razzel Dazzel: We👏🏾 are 👏🏾coming👏🏾 full 👏🏾throttle👏🏾 with our👏🏾 asks. Once you earn a designation, your market value increases, and you want to account for that. So instead of having to switch to another company (you can if you wish), you can ask that an increase be offered once you earn your destination.

💫I've reviewed hundreds of resumes either through my business or work. And there are a few common mistakes I think you should avoid.

👉🏾You want to remove your full mailing address for the simple fact that it protects your identity. Secondly, it helps remove bias on the recruiter's end. Hiring managers will think that a candidate "lives too faraway" or is "from a rough neighbourhood."
👉🏾When I was living in the GTA and was applying for jobs in Ottawa, I removed my location completely. In this new digital age where most companies are working remotely, your location is not of much importance.

👉🏾"To gain full-time employment with your organization" At the very least, list the name of the organization. Whenever I see "with your organization," I know the candidate has been applying to several jobs without any real strategy to see if they can land an interview. Remove the objective statement and dive right into your work experience.

👉🏾Focus on your most recent/relevant education. Listing your high school experience may make you sound like a junior candidate. Are you looking to gain more educational experience? Tap in training from @linkedinlearning or @coursera They are well known and affordable.

👉🏾I once receive a 16-page resume. SIXTEEN PAGES. On average, you have about 7.5 seconds to catch a recruiter's attention. Make sure your resume is two pages in length and really focus on your last five years of experience in your cover letter.

👉🏾And one last thing, when applying to jobs, avoid applying directly from Indeed.ca. Indeed changes the formatting of your resume. Go onto the companies website and apply directly from there.

💫My Christmas tree is finally down, and now I can enjoy my reading nook again. At the start of every year, I read "Mixed Emotions" by @pauleannareid and @brandwithdrew

💎You see, I enjoy this book because it's split into three parts:

👉🏾" For people who don't know what they want."

👉🏾" For Corporate 9-5ers."

👉🏾" For entrepreneurs."

In this book, @pauleannareid explains how she used her 9-5 job as a free business school, and tbh it truly is free business school. I've read this book at least four times, and every single time, I feel like I learn something new.

One of my goals is for Pauleanna to take me to work with her ( she does this a lot)

So excuse me while I go and fight for my dreams. 💭💭💭

It's the question you know the answer to, but you should avoid answering until an offer is presented.

Why?

👉🏾Because you don't want to undervalue yourself before knowing the salary range and other benefits available.

👉🏾 Imagine saying you would be comfortable with a salary range of $50,000-60,000 when Company X's budget for this role is actually $65,000- $75,000. That, my friend, is what experts call "fumbling the bag."

👉🏾An offer of employment will come with a salary offer or at least the salary range. From there, you can negotiate your total compensation <-- more on that later.

👉🏾During the interview, you ( the candidate) should also be trying to assess:

✅The scope of work for the role
✅Major upcoming projects
✅Key peak work seasons
✅Goals for first 90-120 days of employment

👉🏾If the salary question is absolutely unavoidable, be sure to know what people in your industry are paid
👉🏾Research the average salary for the role you're applying for
👉🏾Determine what salary you would need to improve/ maintain your lifestyle

☎️I always recommend saving a copy of the job description to my clients. This way, when the Recruiter/ Hiring Manager calls, you have a copy in front of you and can use the description as a reference point.

💫💫It's also helpful to have the job description handy when it comes time to develop questions for the interview.

When responding to the recruiter, use the STAR Method to describe the situation and how you accomplished the goal.

Before leaving the call, you also want to confirm a few things.

💎Who is the hiring manager? ( this way, you can search them up on LinkedIn)

💎Confirm the salary range ( make sure it's in line with your desired range)

💎How many rounds of interviews should you expect?

💫💫Once all is said and done, send a short follow-up to the Hiring Manager confirming your interest.

💎@charityvillage is great if you work within the non-profit sector. Most non-profit jobs are posted on this job board. The website also allows you to narrow down your search by location, job title, etc.

💎@indeedworks I learned about Indeed when I was 17. I've had hiring alerts sent to my email ever since. Obviously, the alerts have evolved but Indeed is the most well-known website, in my opinion.

💎@linkedin- I love LinkedIn because they have training modules on @linkedinlearning as well as job postings. You can connect with recruiters and see the hiring manager listed on the job posting. If you're searching for jobs, be sure to use the "applied" feature on the job posting. This way, a copy of the job description will be saved for you. This comes in very handy when it's time for a job interview.
